Many female tattoo enthusiasts will conjure up the image of a heart so it is not surprising that heart tattoos for women are such a classic choice, having been in fashion from as far back as the early 20th century. Most people opt for a tattoo that has a personal meaning to them as individuals and the heart is perhaps a common choice as it represents many different things.

Centuries ago, people went for heart tattoos for religious reasons to design their bodies as many religions viewed it as our spiritual core. In more recent years heart designs are chosen to symbolize love and a heart shaped tattoo with the name of one’s beloved makes it even more romantic.  As time has gone by, these designs have progressed to become elaborate and intricate tattoos in vibrant colours with other features entwined with the basic heart shape. A lot of artists, particularly woman, have created various designs incorporating other romantic symbols such as cupid or two love birds within the tattoo. Flower designs are also much sought after in heart tattoos for women and the location of the tattoo is a major factor in determining the end result as differing body parts may influence the chosen design. If inked onto the wrist, the design depicted tends to be simple and delicate to emphasize the shape while a more elaborate design would look better on the arm.

These are different categories of heart designs from Celtic tattoos with loops and knots to tribal variations in bold blank inks as well as other more traditional styles. The Celtic knot around the heart is symbolizing the bond of love between the woman and the object of her affection and may also include spirals while the tribal design is more detailed and looks great anywhere on the body. The latter is often done in blank ink which gives it a prominent appearance that really stands out on the skin. Other popular heart tattoos for women may include wings and these designs have a double meaning. While the wings signify freedom the heart stands for love, thus making a statement about one’s ability to love freely however broken heart tattoos may signify the opposite. These are fairly common despite their sad significance and many women choose this design after a break up perhaps as a personal reminder that love hurts.  However, on a more positive note many women opt for heart tattoos simply because they capture our passion and femininity.
